The Metropolitan Building – My First Visit

The Metropolitan Building has long been on my list of Detroit abandoned buildings to explore.  Myself and three friends made the trip a couple of weeks ago, however, the way in is a bit more involved than most buildings I have explored. It involves climbing up scaffolding into a first floor window.  And, in the cover of darkness.   But, this trip was definitely worth it since we were treated to a beautiful sunrise. One of the friends is a woman from Chicago who will play guide on our upcoming trip to the abandoned city of Gary, IN. Looking forward to that, and as you might guess, there will be pictures!

A little history of the building, according to Wikipedia and HistoricDetroit.org:

  • Opened: 1925
  • Closed: 1977
  • Height:  173 feet
  • Number of Floors:  15
  • Architectural style:  Gothic Revival

The Metropolitan Building is a high-rise office building located on a triangular lot at 33 John R Street in downtown Detroit near Grand Circus Park.  It appears the building was retail shops, housing mainly jewelry stores. We did see evidence on several floors of this – door signage with “jewelry” or “wholesale jewelry” so I was not surprised to read this.

Images below are in order from the roof of the building, down to the first floor lobby.
