Photographing the Pere Marquette 1225 Steam Locomotive

These past two weekends I spent train chasing (yes it is as fun as it sounds!). This is my second year shooting the Pere Marquette 1225 steam locomotive (also known as the North Pole Express – you know, from The Polar Express movie with Tom Hanks), owned and operated by the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, MI. Every holiday season they run the train from Owosso to Ashley, MI (runs for six weekends on Fri/Sat/Sun between Thanksgiving and Christmas). While I have never ridden the train (but others have and say its a wonderful experience!), I have just as much or more fun photographing it!

It was recently brought to my attention that the people who see us photographing the trains call us “Foamers”, because we “foam at the mouth” when we see the train coming and can’t wait to photograph it! I got a kick out of that. I will proudly call myself a foamer (I had mistakenly called the term “foamie”, personally I think it’s a better name).

These images were captured along the way between Owosso and Ashley, some picturesque like the Robbins Furniture Co. and Carlton Elevator buildings, and others are open-spaced shots. If we time it just right, and there is no snow or treacherous conditions, we can photograph 4-5 locations in a train chase. And that is moving fast! Of course, we also still like to shoot the train while it is standing still.

Below are images I captured this train season (my favorite is at the bottom!).

Lovely photos! I’m heading over there next weekend, from SW Corner of the state. A friend of mine has shared a map with me that has several stops for photographing the train. Are you will to share your route, and where you stop? It would be awesome to be able to get 4 or 5 different location shots.
Thanks, maybe we’ll meet each other along the way
